Reimagining Business
We are delighted to invite you to the inauguration of our new Centre for Sustainable Business (CSB), a hub of evidence-based actionable insights for businesses, civil society organisations, policy makers, consumers and other groups.
This exciting research Centre, focusing on issues of climate emergency and social justice affecting businesses, will be officially launched in a hybrid event at the University’s Central Teaching Hub (CTH) on 18 October 2022 at 5pm.
The Centre will act as a broker and ‘translator’ of academic research, stimulating provocative dialogue on business sustainability challenges, to support the development of new research agendas.
Under the theme ‘Reimagining Business’, the event is an opportunity to connect with business and nurture research collaborations to better understand and find solutions to their sustainability challenges.
Businesses, policymakers and consumer organisations are welcome to join this new network of ideas, knowledge and experience, where we can collectively think how to do things differently and reimagine a more sustainable future.
Launch event agenda
The event will be hosted by the Centre’s Director, Professor Jo Meehan, and keynote speakers Jeremy Nicholls (SDG Assurance Framework Lead at the United Nations Development Programme), Kate Downes and Katie Dean (Assistant Director - Evidence, Research & Intelligence, and Strategic Transformation Lead respectively, at the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority).
Jeremy, will provide an overview of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and Impact Standards, and how businesses need to proactively move beyond legally compliant Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria, to gain a competitive advantage and prepare for more stringent regulation.
Kate and Katie, will share their experience of working with our researchers to reimagine a sustainable future for the Liverpool City Region, by developing a long-term social value strategy for the year 2032.

Sustainable event
As we try to embed sustainability thinking into business practice, we have started by organising the Centre's launch event as sustainably as possible.
Venue
The CTH is a highly energy efficient facility with an advanced heat recovery system, designed to meet the BREEAM “Excellent” criteria:
- Exposed concrete surfaces provide thermal mass
- High floor to ceiling heights maximise day lighting
- Passive ventilation, solar shading, low velocity air distribution, chilled beams to reduce energy consumption
- Solar heating, and heat and power from a campus Energy Centre
- Rainwater harvesting
- Garden for growing fruit and vegetables and herb wall
Accessibility
The building is fully DDA compliant, and exceeds current legislative requirements to ensure it is accessible and useable by all.
Hybrid event
The event is available for those who cannot attend in person via a Zoom link, which will be send via email once you secure an Eventbrite ticket.
On site, we will try to make the event as eco-friendly as possible, by avoiding the use of paper, and substituting print-outs with digital screens and QR codes for guests to access relevant information.
Catering
During the event we will provide light snacks, tea, coffee and water.
To avoid food wastage we will ask you in advance if you would like to be catered for and if there are any dietary requirements we should be aware of.
We have also thought about other elements to make catering as sustainable as possible:
- Locally sourced foods
- No paper or plastic cups/cutlery
- Water dispensers
- Vegan and vegetarian options only
- Whole fruits and biscuits that will not be wasted after the event
- Guests can take any left over food home
- Feel free to bring your own food container, water bottle or cup!
