The final Meet-up of this academic year is focused on the charity sector and should appeal to those who are either involved in or are interested in setting up a charitable foundation or pursuing a career in charity.

For this Meet-up we are delighted to welcome Sharne Williams Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and co-founder of the Paul Lavelle Foundation, a frontline therapeutic service for male victims and survivors of domestic abuse set up in memory of her late friend Paul Lavelle. The service is focused on recovery and is designed to provide a person-centred blend of therapeutic, advocacy, advice and signposting support activities.

As a co-founder of the charity Sharne will set the scene talking about the circumstances that led her to setting up the charity, the work it does in the local community and how it has evolved since it was first set up seven years ago.

She will also talk about the steps involved in setting up and running a charitable foundation which include identifying a strong cause, having a clear vision and being surrounded by a great team of volunteers and board trustees.

Sharne will also cover bid writing, fundraising and event planning in her talk.

You'll then have the opportunity for informal networking whilst enjoying FREE food and refreshments.

BCfE Seminar Series May 2025

The returns from the intergenerational transmission of occupations: medical doctors and the role of self-employment

Speaker: Dr Maria Ventura, Lecturer in Economics, University of Edinburgh
Date: Wednesday 7 May 2025
Time: 2.00-3.30pm
Place: University of Liverpool Management School, SR1

In her presentation, Maria uses data from the Netherlands and a unique policy experiment to document the incidence of occupational persistence across generations and estimate individuals' additional gains when choosing the same profession as their parents.

The analysis focuses on the medical profession to disaggregate Ordinary Least Squares (OLS)-estimated returns into a treatment and a selection effect of occupational transmission. Estimates show that ‘dynastic' doctors experience a 23% income boost compared with individuals who did not follow their parents.

Furthermore, the analysis shows a substantial negative selection bias in the OLS coefficients, suggesting that individuals selecting to follow their parents perform worse than their peers when forced into different occupations. Maria also explores the potential mechanisms and isolates the inheritance of practices for self-employed doctors as one of the main explanations for the gains.

Maria Ventura is a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Edinburgh since 2024. She is also a Research Associate at the Centre for Economic Performance and obtained her PhD from the London School of Economics. Her main research interests are educational and occupational choice, inequality, and social mobility.
