Sam Cartwright

BA Marketing with a Year in Industry, 2018

Sam studied Marketing with a Year in Industry at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 2018. Since graduation, he has gained 6 years of B2B marketing experience, predominantly in the events industry.

What was your best experience while studying your course at the University of Liverpool?

My best experience was me and five other students setting up the Marketing Society. I think the biggest driver for that for me was the overwhelming support we got from the Marketing tutors.

Between that and the time spent in lessons, they were always available for a quick chat, whether that be regarding the course or career support.

The tutors in the Management School always went above the call of duty when it came to supporting students. I made the most of the time I got with tutors, as well as building relationships with other people on the course.

This gave a nice balance to student life and meant I had a good support network.

Why did you choose the University of Liverpool Management School?

I chose the Management School because I had my heart set on Marketing and Liverpool. The reputation proceeds itself in a really positive way, achieving what the school has achieved in such a short space of time is pretty amazing.

I really wanted to be a part of that. I think the reason it is so successful is because of the tutors and the continuous investment the University puts into the school.

Something else that appealed to me from the open day all those years ago was what you get out of the course once you graduate.

The success of past students from ULMS is incredible!

Which aspects of your course do you think have been the most beneficial to your career development?

100% the placement year! I felt It got me through the door in most interviews I had and was a great way of breaking down the course.

The experience I gained there really helped me going into my final year, as I could see how theory fitted in with the practice.

The use of case studies within most of the coursework was very beneficial.

Looking at real-world examples of brands in the marketplace, made the work more interesting, gave you a good understanding of how applicable marketing is in the real world, and also pointed you in the right direction regarding which industry to look for jobs in.

What are your top tips for students wishing to work in your sector/role?

I would say do a placement year. Preferably one in the sector you wish to work in but that is not essential as I worked in Travel Tech during my placement year. If not, then definitely do a summer placement somewhere.

As I said, it was my experience that helped get me through the door and where I used most of my examples in interviews.

I really made the most of the Career Studio. The staff there are amazing. They helped me so much when I was figuring out where to look.

Do you have any top tips to share with future and current students to help them make the most of University?

I would reiterate making the most of the Career Studio and extra time with tutors as their experience and advice is invaluable. I would say, definitely embrace Liverpool and the time you have as I really miss it.

Get involved with as many societies as you possibly can! I joined the Comedy and Marketing societies and had a really great time. It is good to expand your friend groups.

My biggest piece of advice would be to get to know everyone on your course. Chat with them outside lecture halls, go for a drink with them, grab a coffee, I miss my coursemates and wish I had got to know them sooner.

What are your future career aspirations?

Events are where I want to be because you get to network with so many influencers, travel, do something different and learn something new every single day!
