Our international partners in Europe, Australia, North America and Asia, offer different pathways for students to experience new cultures, graduate with an excellent degree and boost their employability.
All our partner universities teach in English and provide a wide range of programmes in Business, Marketing, Accounting and Economics, and include cultural and social activities to take the students’ learning out of the classroom.
The available destinations, and impact on final marks, duration and title of the degree will vary depending on the chosen pathway.
Semester abroad
This option allows undergraduate students to spend a semester abroad doing part of their degree overseas, without adding any extra time to their studies.
During the semester abroad, students undertake modules in their subject area. The credits and grades obtained are then transferred back to their UK degree with no additional tuition fees.
Although the programme is not reflected in the degree title, it is recognised in the student’s Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR).
Year abroad
With this option, undergraduate students can do a full academic year at a partner overseas university, extending their studies by one year.
The programme is marked on a pass/fail basis, which means it does not count towards the student’s final degree classification.
However, if the student passes, this is reflected on the degree title with it changing to 'Subject' with a Year Abroad (e.g. BA Marketing with a Year Abroad), to help students stand out in the employment market after graduation.
Year in China at XJTLU
This is a special one-year programme at our English speaking partner university Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou, where students have the opportunity to study modules on Chinese history and culture.
Although most modules are delivered in English, students also learn Mandarin which provides them with the foundation to speak and understand the language to a basic level.
Like the standard year abroad programme, the year in China extends the degree by one year and it does not count towards the student’s final degree mark.
However, if the student passes, the degree title changes to 'Subject' with a Year in China (eg BA in Accounting and Finance with a Year in China), reflecting their enhanced cultural understanding of one of the largest and fastest growing economies.
Summer abroad
The summer abroad option is the shortest of all global opportunities, but it is great chance to get all the benefits of an international experience without being away from home for a full year or a semester.
Taking place during the vacation period, students can undertake modules related to their subject area and/or learn more about the host country.
Many universities also have a social programme to helps students become immersed in the local culture.
The summer experience is non-credit bearing, but it is reflected on the HEAR and students receive an official transcript or certificate of completion.
