Niall obtained his undergraduate Biochemistry degree at the University of Dundee, before completing his PhD at the University of Glasgow. Following 2 postdoctoral fellowships (University of Dundee, UK and University of Michigan, USA) he gained an Independent Research Establishment Scheme (IRES) Fellowship in the Medical School at Newcastle University. Niall moved to the University of Liverpool in late 2019 as part of the Department of Biochemistry in the Institute of Integrative Biology. The focus of his research is to understand how hypoxic tumour cells preferentially translate protective proteins to survive and thrive in low oxygen. In addition to his research Niall teaches on a number of undergraduate degree programmes.
