An exploration of why people value music, via an overview of central orientations and key texts in the aesthetics of music, from ancient to modern. Lectures will guide students through influential ideas in the history of music philosophy and intellectual history; and seminars will afford an opportunity to reflect upon and discuss this material in greater depth and detail.
