The BA (Hons) Music (W300) at the University of Liverpool combines academic excellence with creative freedom, allowing you to develop as a musician, thinker, researcher and creator. Whether your passion lies in performance, composition, music technology, music history, analysis or cultural studies, you’ll have the flexibility to shape your degree around your interests and ambitions.

Undergraduate students in the Department of Music have the opportunity to spend a year in industry, either in their third year, or by adding a ‘follow-on year’ at the end of their academic studies. These are paid placements within an organisation in industry, broadly defined, and you will receive support from the Department and the School of the Arts to source and apply for opportunities. In year one, students must take MUSI122 (yearlong 30 credits) and MUSI130 (Semester 1 15 credits).
Students must take either MUSI181 (15 credits Semester 1) or MUSI180 (15 credits Semester 2). Students may also take both modules if they wish.
All other modules are optional to make up the total of 120 credits.

In exceptional circumstances, individual students may be allowed to take a module without the normal pre-requisite (at the discretion of the module convenor) on the basis of clear and demonstrable comparable experience e.g., a student with A-Level Music Technology may be permitted to omit the introductory/basic Tech modules in the first semester of year one.
For performance in classical or popular performance students must satisfy the induction audition requirements for entry to the modules.

Select an Independent Project which is a yearlong module. There is a required module, worth 15 credits, in each semester. From the baskets select 2 further modules from the options, if accepted onto a SOTA300 placement an optional module from each semester must be dropped.

In year one core modules look at classical music repertoire and analysis, while in years two and three you focus in more detail on the areas that interest you most (such as history, analysis, psychology, audio-visual, performance, or composition etc).
We employ a range of teaching methods, with an emphasis on student participation and interaction. You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, studio-based activities, and independent study. In your first year, you’ll develop core skills in music analysis, theory, and historical inquiry. As your degree progresses, you’ll have increasing freedom to focus on the topics that interest you most. You’ll also benefit from collaborative projects, practical learning opportunities, and engagement with professional musicians, industry experts, and cultural partners across Liverpool. These experiences will help you acquire valuable, marketable skills and knowledge for your future.
Assessment is varied and reflects the diverse nature of musical study and practice. Depending on your module choices, you’ll be assessed through essays, coursework, presentations, musical analyses, performances, composition portfolios, creative music technology projects and independent research work. In your final year, you’ll complete a substantial project, such as a dissertation, technology portfolio, composition portfolio or recital, allowing you to showcase your specialist interests and skills.

Our recently renovated facilities include studios, teaching spaces and industry standard equipment, and we recently opened the Tung Auditorium: a 400-seat state of the art performance venue, which has been developed to support our requirements and to function as a public-facing space for concerts outside of teaching time.

We offer a range of scholarships and bursaries that could help pay your tuition and living expenses.
4 scholarships are available each year to support undergraduate applicants from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds who permanently reside in the Liverpool City Region. Successful applicants will receive a stipend of £5,000 per year for 3 years. Applications open in August 2026.
This scholarship will support undergraduate students from widening participation backgrounds in the Department of Languages, Cultures and Film with their year abroad.
This award offers £3,000 per year for a UK undergraduate student from an under-represented background who has successfully completed the Liverpool Scholars or Pathways to Medicine programme.
If you’re a UK student joining an undergraduate degree and have a household income below £35,000, you could be eligible for a Liverpool Bursary worth up to £2,000 for each year of undergraduate study.
Apply for an Asylum Seekers Scholarship and you could have your tuition fees paid in full and receive help with study costs. You’ll need to have applied for asylum in the UK, or be the dependant of an asylum seeker, and be joining an eligible undergraduate degree.
If you’ve spent 13 or more weeks in Local Authority care since age 14, you could be eligible for a bursary of £3,000 per year of study. You’ll need to be a UK student joining an eligible undergraduate degree and be aged 28 or above on 1 September in the year you start.
Are you a UK student with a Black African or Caribbean heritage and a household income of £25,000 or less? You could be eligible to apply for a Cowrie Foundation Scholarship worth up to £8,000 for each year of undergraduate study.
If you’re a UK student identified as estranged by Student Finance England (or the equivalent UK funding body), you could be eligible for a bursary of £1,000 for each year of undergraduate study.
Joining a School of Biosciences degree and have a household income of less than £25,000? If you’re a UK student, you could apply to receive £4,500 per year for three years of your undergraduate course.
Do you live in the Liverpool City Region with a household income of £25,000 or less? Did neither of your parents attend University? You could be eligible to apply for a Nolan Scholarship worth £5,000 per year for three years of undergraduate study.
Are you a UK student with a household income of £25,000 or less? If you’ve participated in an eligible outreach programme, you could be eligible to apply for a Rigby Enterprise Award worth £5,000 per year for three years of your undergraduate degree.
Are you a UK student with a household income of £26,500 or less? Did neither of your parents attend University? You could be eligible to apply for a ROLABOTIC Scholarship worth £4,500 for each year of your undergraduate degree.

Joining a degree in the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science? If you’re a UK student with household income below £25,000, you could be eligible to apply for £5,000 a year for three years of study. Two awards will be available per academic year.
If you’re a young adult and a registered carer in the UK, you might be eligible for a £1,000 bursary for each year of study. You’ll need to be aged 18-25 on 1 September in the year you start your undergraduate degree.

As part of our application process, applicants are normally required to attend an Applicant Interview and Music Experience Day, where you will either have an interview or a short audition with an academic member of staff. This is your chance to demonstrate your passion for the subject and allow us to make a decision on your application. (There is an option for phone or Skype interviews).

This is offered on campus at the University of Liverpool International College, in partnership with Kaplan International Pathways. It’s a specialist preparation course for postgraduate study, and when you pass the Pre-Master’s at the required level with good attendance, you’re guaranteed entry to a University of Liverpool master’s degree. |
