Expertise
The University has specialist researchers examining
human rights case law and evaluating how it applies to
corporations. This expertise is supported by detailed
knowledge of the historical and political development of
the concept of human rights violations throughout the late
20
th and early 21st century.
Our expertise is based on multidisciplinary studies
involving researchers in law, criminology, politics,
business, economics and international relations. Together
we address the legal, social and political construction
of human rights and the concept of corporate social
responsibility (CSR). We have developed methodologies
which analyse case law, but also take account of debates
and philosophical discussion on how the concept of CSR
and human rights may develop in the future.
Our work is currently being used to develop practical
policy suggestions that address the problem of corporate
human rights violations. At the centre of this is a detailed
proposal to develop new forums that can provide viable
alternatives to human rights courts. These proposals are
being developed in consultation with judges at the
European Court of Human Rights.
