Our commitment to the City Region
Much of our expertise is dedicated to supporting policy-
makers and regional government to develop evidence-
based policies and initiatives to foster regional growth,
sustainability and social development and cohesion.
As a key investor in the region’s infrastructure, and as a
major employer, we work closely with local stakeholders
and the communities we serve.
Public events
Throughout the year the University is responsible for
organising and hosting a range of public events and
lectures on campus.
Policy Provocations
Policy Provocations takes on big policy challenges
shaping our future and asks how we can tackle them in
new ways.
Led by the University of Liverpool and City Region
partners across the public, private and third sectors,
the series brings together perspectives from leading
international, UK and local thinkers. Policy Provocations
provides a platform for passionate and informed public
debate confronting issues that affect us all.
Science and Society lectures
Science & Society lectures are a series of
interdisciplinary lectures exploring the beneficial
relationship between science and society, given by
leading academics and experts from around the globe.
They have featured lectures on stem cell research, living
longer, renewable energy, climate change, funding
of biomedical research and the relationship between
science and international relations.
Interchange
Interchange is a registered charity which links the three
Liverpool universities with the local voluntary and
community sector.
Community, voluntary and faith (CVF) organisations
within Greater Merseyside can contact Interchange
to discuss the problems and challenges they face,
Interchange then finds undergraduate and postgraduate
students with the appropriate skills to work on the project
and develop solutions.
Organisations can benefit from a wide range of research
or work-based projects, such as evaluation studies,
documentary and oral histories, feasibility studies and
community activities. In return, the University awards
students credit towards their degree in recognition of the
value that working in this real life context delivers.
Interchange is operated by the University of Liverpool
in partnership with Liverpool Hope University and is
funded by the John Moores Foundation.

Helping to create Liverpool’s Knowledge Economy
In recent years the University of Liverpool has played an
increasingly active role in helping to shape and define
Liverpool’s economic future. The University’s Vice-
Chancellor chairs the City Region’s Knowledge
Economy Group which was set up to identify key areas
for future growth. The Group includes representatives
of Liverpool John Moores University, the Liverpool
Enterprise Partnership, Liverpool Vision and other key
knowledge businesses in the city.
The group has produced the Knowledge Economy Plan
which has audited the City Region’s assets, identifying
where distinctive strengths exist and where there is the
potential to be a UK leader.
The University is not just helping to develop ideas but
is actively involved in creating Liverpool’s knowledge
economy. We are one of the major partners in the
development of the new Royal Liverpool Hospital,
investing in the development of new buildings and
facilities to make Liverpool a major centre for life
sciences research within the UK.
