InFocus: Just Do It! Real World Impact for Your Research

In Focus

In the second InFocus event of 2023-24, we welcomed back Dr Naomi Tyrrell for her popular workshop on real world impact for research. Research impact is an increasingly important aspect of research at all levels, both within and outside academia, and in PGR Developmental Need Analysis questionnaires it has been identified as an area that students would like additional support. In response, this workshop focused on practical strategies that current PGR students in the School of the Arts can use to maximise the impact of their research.

From the discussions between Naomi, current PGRs, and staff, it emerged that while certain types of research have immediately obvious impact value, other types of research require more creative thinking and careful planning in order to lead to impact. Naomi’s workshop encouraged researchers to think systematically about possible routes to impact, from knowledge exchange to policy impact, for all types of research that are currently undertaken in the School.

The discussion also highlighted that while conference attendance and teaching are valuable in that they enhance research and career prospects by providing important experience and the opportunity to develop key skills, impact is particularly important as it refers to research outcomes that have a broader reach, and ultimately can impact society in meaningful ways. Naomi also provided guidance on the use of Social Media to maximise impact, as well as practical action plans.

Attendees’ feedback noted that the workshop sections on networking and its importance were very valuable, and the actions plans for developing impact seem particularly useful.

The resources provided include an Impact Engagement Plan template, which you may find useful:
