Molar
activities We participated with the MOLAR
program of the European Union which has now finished and is followed up by
EMERGE (see
New
projects). We investigated the effect of trace
metal speciation on their geochemistry and possibly biological availability.
Electrochemical techniques (cathodic stripping voltammetry) were combined with
ligand competition to determine the chemical speciation of lead, copper, and
iron, and possibly other metals such as manganese and chromium. The chemical
speciation will be related to the pathway of the metals through the lakes,
including run-off, atmospheric inputs, and outputs into streams or sediments. The work included: sample collection at
lakes in Norway, Austria, Spain, and the UK, and metal detection in the field. A picture of some of the Liverpool participants
