Photo Report on the Zuerich Congress

The 36th European Congress of the Regional Science Association took place in Zuerich, Switzerland, during the period 26-30 August 1996 - hosted by the ORL Institute of the ETH Zuerich.

The Congress was attended by a total of over 300 participants, many of whom were present for the well attended opening plenary session which took place on the morning of Tuesday 27 August.

ERSAC Council Meeting

A meeting of the European Regional Science Association Council (ERSAC) took place during the Congress at which important changes to the ERSA constitution were approved (see below).

IARDC International Membership Presentations

Murat Albegov, supported by Alexander Granberg, introduces the presentation of certificates to the first three international Members of the newly created International Academy of Regional Development and Cooperation (IARDC). The Academy was registered in Moscow in November 1995 and has been created 'to pool and coordinate the efforts of scientists, practical state and municipal government workers, and business people from various countries who are seeking to further stable regional development and all-round mutually beneficial regional cooperation'.

Murat Albegov and Alexander Granberg present an IARDC Membership certificate to former European RSA President Peter Nijkamp, his successor Folke Snickars, and current European RSA President Juan Cuadrado Roura.

EPAINOS Prize Presentation

During the Congress Dinner, Folke Snickars, in his capacity as Chairman of the Reading Committee, introduces Erik Verhoef, of the Department of Economics, Free University of Amsterdam, as the recipient of the first ever Epainos Prize. The Prize is awarded annually by the European RSA for the 'best paper by a young European regional scientist'. The winner receives 600 ECU plus a commemorative gift and a certificate.

Presentation of Prizes for best Poster Session entries

Judges Lay Gibson and Antoine Bailly introduce the winners of the prizes for the best entries in the Poster Session - the ultimate prize - a Swiss milking stool - raised aloft on behalf of the overall winner ....

All prize winners take a well-deserved bow ... acclaimed by an appreciative audience during the Congress Dinner.
