Wrecks near Hilbre Island

Peter 1831:
  Lamentable Shipwreck. - About eight o'clock Saturday night last [12 March 1831], the sloop Peter, Wm. Bagnell master, laden with coals, while on her passage from Connah's Quay to Conway, was wrecked near Hilbre Island. We are sorry to state, that the captain, his wife, and three hands, all perished. - Three of the bodies, have since been found, and inquests held on them before Richard Buckley Esq. one of the coroners for this city. Alicia 1831 :
  The sloop Alicia, from Liverpool to Carnarvon, sunk on Wednesday [16 November 1831] in Hilbre Pool [anchorage east of Hilbre].

Margaret 1854
  Morning Advertiser - Saturday 18 February 1854: Liverpool, Feb. 17. Wind W fresh. High Water 2.37. The flat Margaret, of Preston, was wrecked this morning on West Hoyle, the crew escaping in their own boat. The flat subsequently drifted into Hoylake. [also described as at Hilbre Island]
  Shipping and Mercantile Gazette - Wednesday 22 February 1854: Reports from receivers under the wreck and salv. act. Liverpool, Feb. 18. Relating to 112 brls of flour. Deposition of John Heck, boatman of Hoylake, relating to Margaret flat, of Preston, derelict (cargo fire-bricks).

Helen 1854
  The flat Helen, carrying bricks, foundered off Hilbre Island on 27 October 1854, crew saved in own boat. Liverpool newspapers quote the name as Ellen. One report says sunk at 92 per chart - which is a few miles north of East Hoyle Spit.

Freddy 1877
  MNL in 1877 has flat Freddy of Runcorn, ON 62014, 38 tons, built Winsford 1844, owned Runcorn, last entry 1877, (
more detail); and flat Freddy of Liverpool, ON 1624, 55 tons, built Winsford 1839, owned Muspratt, Liverpool, last entry 1878. The former seems to be the flat reported here as lost.
  Liverpool Daily Post - Tuesday 10 July 1877: The flat Freddy, Holywell for this port [Liverpool], sank No. 86 per chart [Hilbre Swash]; crew saved in their own boat, and landed here.
  BOT wreck return adds, crew 2, captain J. More, cargo 70 tons of limestone, 38 tons.

Glyndwr 1886
  The Welsh coasting schooner Glyndwr, built Barmouth 1840 of 77 tons registered Beaumaris, owned by Captain O Griffiths, carrying coal to Anglesey, was driven ashore on Hilbre island during a heavy gale on the night of 6th January 1886. The crew were all saved.

Albion 1887
  The Albion (flat), from Rhyl for Liverpool (general cargo) foundered near the Swash buoy [marking Hilbre Swash] this morning [16 April 1887]. Crew of two were picked up by the smack Greyhound and landed at Liverpool
  Liverpool Journal of Commerce - Friday 22 April 1887: MDHB: The flat Albion now lies bedded in the Horse Channel, and on the application of the marine surveyor, the water bailiff has been instructed to take means for removing the wreck.
  Note this is a wooden sailing flat, 54 tons, registered Liverpool from 1882, ON 86173, rebuilt 1882, owned Jones, Rhyl, MNL last listing 1887. This is a different vessel from the small steamship Albion that was wrecked on 12 December 1887 on the Hoyle Bank.

Lapwing 1888
  The flat Lapwing was carrying gravel from West Kirby [also described as Dawpool - the nearby anchorage] to Chester. She was built 1849 at Northwich, registered Runcorn, owned Parry, Bagillt, ON 67144, 31 nt, with Captain W Bethell and 2 crew. She foundered on 8 March 1888 on Salisbury Bank in winds of SW force 7. She is not listed after 1888 in MNL.
