7 May 1941 Heinkel 111 P-4 (Werk no.
2874) G1+LL shot down over Bagillt (SW shore of Dee Estuary) by a
Defiant of No. 256 Sq.
  No. 256 squadron flew from RAF Squires Gate (later known as
Blackpool Airport) in the night defence of Liverpool. The Defiant
was a 2-seater (pilot and gunner) with a 4-gun powered turret on its
back (so not forward firing) built by Bolton Paul Aircraft at
Wolverhampton and used in night fighting. The Defiant intially proved
successful since German fighters were used to attacking from above and
behind - where the turret gun worked well. As the German pilots learned
to attack from below and behind - where the turret gun could not fire -
the Defiant's days as a day fighter were over. Instead it was developed
as a night fighter - with some success,
