Iron sailing vessel James Crossfield,
built Vernon, Birkenhead, 1862, 996 tons register. Voyage Calcutta to
Liverpool,
on 6 January 1867 ran aground off Langness, Isle of Man, 35 crew, 2
passengers and Captain's
son all perished. Cargo mostly cotton, some of which was recovered from the
shore. Divers salvaged her later.
[Report of salvage diving - from IOM heritage records]: Two
experienced divers were employed in the summer of 1867 to recover as
much cargo as they could. More divers were employed during June 1870
and recovered over 30 tons of iron from the wreck. They reported that
the vessel was almost intact. During May 1874 further salvage was
carried out by the Liverpool salvage steam flat Aggravator [built
Runcorn 1860, wood, 18 hp screw engine added 1873, ON 28627, 37nrt, 54 grt,
registered Liverpool, owned G Rodriques, closed 1899], Penrith,
master.
