From Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, Wednesday 4 October 1854:
RHYL - Oct 3: The Endeavour sloop [master and part-owner
David Jenkins; built Chester 1817; 35 tons; 45ft x 13.5ft x 8ft], of
Holyhead, from the Clyde (with pig iron) for Saltney, was driven on
shore this morning under Abergele, in a strong gale from the N. [force
10], and was wrecked; crew [3] saved by Rhyl Lifeboat.
From North Wales Chronicle, 7 Oct.
RHYL LIFEBOAT. - With
all the bad opinion the public had of this boat, she has proved her
capabilities. A small vessel [Endeavour] was seen to sink in Abergele
bay, and three of the crew clinging to the mast head, she was manned by
John Foulks, senr., John Foulks, jun., and others, nine in number. She
went through a heavy sea, and brought them safely to shore. She was
under the management of Robert Williams, pilot, Rhyl, and the men
declared their willingness to go out in her all weathers. It is to be
hoped she will be manned with a proper crew that will do credit to the
boat, and give satisfaction to the public. [Rhyl Lifeboat service had
suffered a setback when their lifeboat capsized in 1853 with the loss of
7 lives].
The Point of Ayr lifeboat was called out to "Flat Endeavour of Holyhead", on 4 October 1854, but no service was needed.
Parts of a wooden wreck have recently [2018] uncovered at Pensarn - and is thought likely to be the remains of the sloop Endeavour. Survey report. Reported location: 53° 17.749N, 3° 35.474W, close to LW line.
