HOYLAKE. Prompt Rescue by Fishermen.
The fishing boat "Princess," of Hoylake, Frank Jones,
master, landed at that place on Sunday [17 January 1892] the crew - two
in number - of a flat, who were picked up at sea the previous night
about four miles south-south-west of the North-West Lightship, in a most
exhausted condition. The rescued crew report that their vessel was the
" Hannah and Joseph," of Liverpool, bound for Beaumaris with coal and
that shortly after leaving the Mersey on Saturday she sprang a leak, and
in spite of all their efforts at the pump the water gained on them, and
about midnight they determined to abandon her, and took to the small
boat. The weather was most tempestuous and bitterly cold, their
perilous position by the crew of the fishing boat, who succeeded after
many efforts in picking them up. Captain Jones gave them every care and
attention in his power, supplying them with dry clothing and warm food,
and, after landing them at Hoylake, procuring for them lodgings, and
sending them off by train to their homes on Tuesday morning. Captain
Jones reports that shortly after picking the men up from the small boat
he saw the abandoned flat sink in about six fathoms of water at low
tide, where she will be a danger to passing vessels if not removed.
