This module studies the theme of immigration in France from both a
historical and a contemporary perspective, spanning the period from 1789 to the
contemporary Fifth Republic and the new millennium. It aims to provide students

Online learning resources
There are numerous sites of interest on the web which can be exploited for this module. As a way of getting into web resource usage, and as an introduction to the general theme of this module, read the two online lectures provided by the University of Sunderland: the first offers a short history of immigration, while the second considers the historical background to discrimination in France, before focusing on the affaire du foulard (the headscarf issue) as a key incident in recent French history. A short piece, provided by a French site, offers useful material on French attitudes to immigration since 1945. On the more specific question of integration, read the Petite histoire de l’intégration à la française. The French Senate has produced a substantial text which looks at the headscarf issue in a wider European context, and includes some comparison with events in the UK. Finally, L’Exigence laïque du respect mutuel considers the obligations of secularism towards France’s Muslims.
