The board of examiners for Molecular Biology operates the following marking scheme for written papers/projects/dissertations:

However, your final degree class is determined by a number of factors. Because of the carry forward rule, the marks obtained in your final year will normally comprise 80% of your degree class mark. (This proportion is different for Life Science with a European Language C1T2; see Director for details). The remaining component is determined by your second year average mark (C620) with a proportion from placement year (C621). In addition to the final degree mark, the Board of Examiners will consider the following criteria:
In practice, the only people that are affected by these criteria are those whose final overall mark is within about 2% of a class boundary, or who have had serious personal or health problems during the year. Please note that if you have the misfortune to be in the latter category, it is your responsibility to inform the Honours Director as fully and as early as possible, with supporting documentation where relevant.
The marks which you have obtained from each unit assessed and your overall mark for the year will be made available to you by your Honours School Director as soon as possible after completion of examining processes. Marks will be provisional until confirmed at the Faculty of Science Examiners Meeting.
