Frequently Asked Questions
What type of placement can I do?
Placements will vary depending on which department you go to, but can include office work, laboratory based, or more practical work. For more information on the type of work a department does you can look at the department's website or contact them more information about what their department does.
How do I organise a placement?
Please contact the department(s) that you are interested in directly. Have a look at the list of academic and administrative departments.
Once you have identified a department or departments you might be interested in, please complete an Application for Work Experience and send to the department contact with a covering letter or email.
Please note that your application does not guarantee a placement.
Can anyone do a placement at the University?
We welcome all applications for work experience placements, however the University has a relationship with a number of partner and associate schools as part of its commitment to widening participation, and as such we give priority to students from those schools.
Please visit the Widening Participation and Outreach webpages to view the partner and associate schools list and to find out more.
Why haven’t I been offered a placement?
If you haven’t been offered a placement it is likely to be for the following reasons;
- another student is on placement there at the same time you wished to go
- the department is too busy to supervise a work experience placement at this time
- the person supervising you won’t be available during the time you wish to come.
To increase your chance of getting a placement please apply well in advance and consider a range of departments.
