Becoming a Liverpool Advocate
Recruitment for the Liverpool Advocate takes place in September and October of each academic year.
How do I apply?
Applications are made via Handshake, the University of Liverpool's recruitment platform. Candidates will then be invited to complete a video interview via the ShortlistMe platform.
When can I apply?
The exact timeline for Liverpool Advocate recruitment varies slightly each year, but will typically open in Welcome Week, with interviews in early October and training taking place late October or early November. The full timeline for the year will be available on Handshake, or from the Liverpool Advocate team
Am I eligible to become a Liverpool Advocate?
All University of Liverpool undergraduate and postgraduate students are able to apply for the Liverpool Advocate role, however it is very competitive. We guarantee interviews for, and prioritise students who have:
- Been involved in a pre-entry widening participation programme with us
- Come from an group who are under-represented in Higher Education
We may also prioritise different groups of students depending on the needs of the team (e.g. from specific courses where projects are running focused on those subject areas, or from different years of study to balance the Advocate pool out).
Students must also have at least one full year left of study when they apply, and be interested in working for the full academic year. This means if you are applying in Autumn 2025, you must graduate no earlier than July 2026, and should be interested in working through to the end of August 2026.
If you have any questions about this, please feel free to get in touch with us to discuss.
What are you looking for in a Liverpool Advocate?
We are looking for students who are keen to share their experiences of university and higher education, inspire the next generation of students and get involved with the broad range of work our teams offer. We are looking for friendly students who are happy to engage with young people, parents, teachers, community groups, academic staff and many more audiences.

- Liverpool Advocates apply for shifts via an online platform - the expectation is that Advocates will apply for at least one shift every three months (this could be an in person campus visit shift, online mentoring arranged in your own time or any of the other work opportunities we offer). Advocates who do not apply for shifts or otherwise engage with the programme may be removed from the programme.
