Abbie Harrendence
Project Officer
I joined the Widening Participation team in 2017 as part of the Kickstart Internship Scheme. I had just graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in Psychology and was the first person in my family to attend university.
I work in our pre-16 team which starts with Primary Schools, where we work with 1000s of Year 6 children each year, both on campus and in-school. We introduce the idea of university and aim to raise aspirations towards HE and their career, whilst providing role models they can aspire to.
I run the Merseyside Young Health and Life Scientists programme for years 9-11, which supports students interested in HLS subjects including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Psychology, Health Sciences and Life Sciences. The programme offers tailored support and insight into their chosen subject area, as well as work experience opportunities and GCSE support.
I also coordinate the Fast Trackers mentoring project, designed to support Year 11 students from a Somali, Yemeni and Black British backgrounds to get the most out of their final school year and maximise their results at GCSE level.
