Healthy dogs needed to help develop tests for balance conditions!

Can you help one of our MSc Veterinary Physiotherapy students?

What is this study about?

I am recruiting healthy dogs to take part in a study that will help ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapists like myself to determine if certain exercises would be able to be completed with dogs when suffering from certain balance conditions.  With this knowledge, physiotherapists can then work to improving dogs’ quality of life who are suffering from these conditions.

What does it involve?

You will be asked to bring your dog to the Leahurst Small Animal Teaching Hospital. Your dog will then be asked to complete 5 different gaze and neck exercises for up to 2 minutes each. This may include using treats for your dog’s eye to follow or a toy, dependent on which your dog is likely motivated by. The amount of repetitions of the exercise and the duration is recorded along with a walking test to measure your dog’s tiredness level. The total length of time of the session is likely to be around 45 minutes.

The study will take place between April and May 2022.

Who can take part?

Healthy dogs with no orthopedic, neurological or neck issues. Dogs must also have no known aggressive behavior.
