Peer support
We are proud to have pioneered the implementation of a peer support (PS) programme, wherein student volunteers are trained and supported by an independent counsellor, to provide an accessible and informal wellbeing support network for students.
The programme is student-led and supported and funded by the School of Veterinary Science. Similar programmes have been implemented at other veterinary training institutions, following the success of our own. Student volunteers in years 2-5 are trained in listening skills, handling difficult conversations, signposting, boundary setting and confidentiality. This team meet fortnightly for supported reflective practice, and every six months to refresh their training.
PS are visible within the community, holding drop-in sessions, maintaining an active social media presence, and taking an active role in supporting students during social events and the transition into vet school. Students may contact PS at any time using details posted online and via posters in the student social and learning spaces.
Our student society, Liverpool University Veterinary Society (LUVS), puts student welfare at the heart of their activities. To ensure this is the case, the two LUVS vice-presidents are trained Peer Supporters who act as Wellbeing Officers within the committee.
The PS work alongside the Peer Academic Mentors, creating a holistic support network among our student body.
