Intercalation opportunities

Intercalating students step away from their programme for 12 months in order to pursue more in-depth studies in a subject that is of interest to them; students then return to complete the BVSc programme.

What is Intercalation?

Intercalating is a fantastic opportunity to take a year out from the veterinary course to study another related subject/discipline in greater depth, try out research, and gain another Bachelors or Masters degree in a year.

There are many different intercalated degree courses at different universities across the UK and it is possible to transfer to another university to study a subject of your choice for the year.  It is becoming increasingly common for medical schools to accept veterinary students onto their degree programmes also, although check with each university before applying.

Here at Liverpool we offer a BSc Veterinary Conservation Medicine course specifically designed for veterinary undergraduate students with an interest in conservation.

When can students intercalate?

Vet students can intercalate at the end of their 2nd or 3rd year. You can intercalate a Bachelors level course at the end of your 2nd year and either a Bachelors or Masters at the end of your 3rd year.

Choosing to intercalate is perhaps the best decision I have made while at vet school. Studying the MSc Global Health at Maastricht University has given me a much-needed perspective on health as intrinsically interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral field, allowed me to apply my veterinary knowledge to a broader context, and further inspired me to explore other avenues open to me after graduating. The experience has also taught me how to critically examine, developed my analytical essay writing capabilities, and has given me valuable knowledge and experience of research. I could not have undertaken this degree without the financial support of the intercalation bursary, and I am very grateful to have received it.
