AI blueprint to help tackle antimicrobial resistance on a global scale
December 2023
Researchers from the DPE Group have outlined a framework for artificial intelligence (AI) to improve antimicrobial use and infection care, helping to address the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Their blueprint is detailed in a research paper published today (18 December 2023) in The Lancet Digital Health.
Liverpool welcomes antimicrobial network partners
June 2023
The University of Liverpool recently hosted the first official gathering of the global partners from the Centres for Antimicrobial Optimisation Network (CAMO-Net) for a welcome reception and the inaugural CAMO-Net Management Board Meeting.
CAMO-Net is formed by five ‘national hubs’, which are made up of research teams from the University of Liverpool and Imperial College London, the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the Infectious Diseases Institute in Uganda, and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of São Paulo in Brazil.
New global research consortium to optimise antimicrobial use in humans
April 2023
Research teams from institutions in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America are coming together to form the Centres for Antimicrobial Optimisation Network (CAMO-Net). With up to £11m in funding from Wellcome, this ground-breaking consortium will support translational research to address a major driver of antimicrobial resistance, using a bespoke funding model to help enhance global health research equity.
The David Price Evans Group welcomes Dr Derek Cocker
April 2023
Dr Derek Cocker joined the group as an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Infectious Diseases and Global Health, a role which will see him combining academic research with the final phase of his clinical training.
Derek has keen research interests in evaluating the One Health drivers of antimicrobial resistance and will be conducting a number of projects during his time with the Group. Derek previously completed his PhD at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, with a thesis entitled: 'An investigation into the role of human, animal and environmental factors on transmission of ESBL E. coli and ESBL K. pneumoniae in southern Malawian communities' and has spent time working in in Malawi, Uganda and Tanzania before returning to Liverpool. He will be developing projects seeking to evaluate how preventative action such as health interventions targeted at high-risk groups can improve infection and AMR outcomes in high income and low-resource settings and assess novel opportunities in responsive environmental surveillance methodologies.
Professor Alison Holmes said of his appointment: “I am delighted that the University of Liverpool, and the group in particular, has been able to attract such a talented doctor and researcher to join us. Supporting the next generation of clinical academics and launching them on ambitious career trajectories is the best part of my role and it is a real delight to be working with Derek.”

People of colour: there’s a bias in how pictures are used in global health publications
January 2023
By Dr Esmita Charani, Reader in AMR and global health at the University of Liverpool and Marc Mendelson, Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Cape Town.
Photography is a powerful tool in storytelling and scientific communication. But it can also cause harm when used unethically.
We started to realise how photographs can send the wrong message when we were approached, as a group of infectious disease specialists, to develop a presentation on resistance to antibiotics. Our audience was a clinical group in east Africa.
