Professor Catriona Waitt receives inclusivity in clinical research award
Professor Catriona Waitt was presented with the Dolores Shockley Diversity and Inclusion in Clinical Research Award by the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (ASCPT) at their recent Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs, USA.
The award recognises individuals who contribute to greater diversity and inclusion practices in clinical research, so all potential patient populations benefit from the research. Catriona’s research is based at the Infectious Diseases Institute, Makerere University, Uganda. She received the award in recognition of her research aiming to increase the fair inclusion of pregnant and breastfeeding women in clinical pharmacology research.
Professor Waitt said: “I am honoured to receive this award. Dolores Shockley was the first Black woman to receive a PhD in Pharmacology in the United States and smashed through many barriers in her career. Unfortunately, women still face many barriers in both research participation and research leadership. I hope that through our research programme we can take further steps towards attaining equity of access to research.”
During the conference Catriona delivered a presentation on ‘Attaining Equity of Access to Research’, which generated a lot of thoughtful discussion. Catriona was presented with her award by Walter Kraft, the President of ASCPT and will also receive a $1,000 prize.
