Pharmacologist appointed to European nanomedicine panel
Dr Neill Liptrott from the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics has been elected the Chair of the European Technology Platform for Nanomedicine (ETPN) Working Group on Safety and Characterisation of Nanotechnology.
ETPN has been the focus of nanomedicine activity in Europe for the last 15 years, building an engaged community of more than 125 stakeholders from 27 European countries. The University of Liverpool joined the network in 2022 and earlier this year hosted Nanomed Europe 2023 (NME23), Europe’s largest conference dedicated to nanomedicine.
The working group supports the development of nano-enabled products and applications in medicine across the development pipeline. By addressing safety issues from the very earliest stages, the working group promotes successful translation of nanomedicine from development to implementation.
Dr Liptrott commented “It is an honour to be elected Group Chair, and is in part a recognition of the work we have been doing at the University. The past year has been very exciting for nanomedicine at the University, and how we are engaging with our collaborators globally, both existing and new. I look forward to taking up this role, and working with other members of the ETPN executive board to promote nanomedicine and support the realisation of its full potential.”
Neill’s election as Chair follows his recent appointment as Academic in Residence at the National Measurement Laboratory. He added “Taking up these national and international roles will enable us to bridge the work we are doing in the UK and beyond, ensuring parity between infrastructures, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies in the nanomedicine space.”
Professor Sonia Rocha, Executive Dean of the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology said: “We are so pleased that Dr Liptrott has been recognised with this appointment for his excellence and innovation in nanomedicine. Dr Liptrott is an amazing ambassador for the University of Liverpool, and we hope he finds his role as Chair rewarding.”
Professor Raymond Schiffelers, President of ETPN, added: “We are thrilled to have Neill in our team. Safety and Characterisation is an important aspect of the field, and increasingly so as more and more nanomedicine products enter the market. It is great to have Neill’s leadership in this area and it underlines how Liverpool and the UK are very much connected to our efforts. As ETPN we continue to build bridges across Europe to build a strong community and act as the think tank for European Nanomedicine research".
