Sustainable travel guidance
This guidance has been developed in response to feedback gathered in the 2024 Staff Travel Survey.
Its aim is to provide University of Liverpool staff with information and tools to help them reduce the impact of their business travel activities (including transport and hotel stays) on the University’s scope 3 carbon emissions, supporting our aim to achieve net zero carbon.
This guidance should be used alongside the University’s Travel and Expenses Policy.

Why do Business Travel Emissions matter
Business travel affects our scope 3 carbon emissions, making reduction key to our net zero goals and sustainability commitments.
Flights
Flights substantially impact the University's carbon footprint, there are many important factors to consider before opting for air travel.
Rail
Huge carbon savings can be made through rail travel, we suggest to strongly consider using high speed rail and sleeper trains for both domestic and European travel.
Car travel
Minimising car travel helps to reduce emissions, especially from solo trips. Using our travel calculator can help differentiate the impacts of petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric cars.
Coach
Opting for coach travel is a lower-emission option for many domestic and European journeys.
Combining travel modes
Combining travel modes can lower emissions and improve sustainability, by minimising distance travelled using a higher emissions vehicle.

It is important to consider sustainable accommodation choices with positive environmental initiatives when travelling.
