The University’s first ever Biodiversity Plan, which builds upon the commitments set out in our Sustainability Strategy and Environmental Policy, has been published today as part of this year’s Sustainability Week.
Developed in consultation with key stakeholders across the University, the plan sets out our approach to protecting and enhancing green spaces on campus for the benefit of our students, staff and the wider local community as well as tackling the impacts on biodiversity throughout our supply chain.
The plan is guided by three key principles:
- Principle 1: We will increase biodiversity throughout our estate, supporting greater genetic, species and ecosystem diversity.
- Principle 2: We will embed, within our university culture, an appreciation of the inherent value for biodiversity and the and social and economic benefits of nature.
- Principle 3: We will reduce harm to biodiversity beyond our estate and campus operations by influencing our supply chain and investment activities to identify and reduce harmful practices.
These principles will form the basis of concrete actions to improve biodiversity both within and beyond our estate.
Nicola Davies, Chair of the University’s Sustainability Committee, said, “I am delighted to introduce our new Biodiversity Plan, which represents an important step in our commitment to protecting and enhancing nature. Biodiversity is a critical issue, and this plan sets out how we as a university community can play a role in reversing biodiversity loss and fostering a more sustainable environment.”
Rachael Hanmer-Dwight, Head of Environmental Sustainability and Energy Services explained, “Biodiversity is essential for a healthy planet, and our new plan sets out clear actions to enhance our natural environment and reduce negative impacts beyond our campus. This is a long-term commitment, and collaboration across our university community will be key to its success.”
