Get ready for Sustainability Week 2024

Posted on: 5 February 2024 in Issue 7

The University’s Sustainability Week is fast approaching, taking place from 26th February – 1st March, with a full programme of exciting and informative events and opportunities for staff and students to learn about sustainability and get involved.

As part of the Feel Good February initiative and in collaboration with the Guild of Students, the aim of Sustainability Week is to raise awareness of sustainability at the University and promote positive behaviour change amongst our community.

Staff and students will be able to explore a range of activities and events which reflect our broader commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Programme highlights

We invite all staff and students to come onto campus to see what’s happening. Here are just some of the many activities taking place during Sustainability Week:

The Sustainability Roadshow will be visiting each of the faculties, professional service staff, and the Guild of Students throughout the week, to showcase sustainability initiatives linked to the sustainability strategy and climate plan. Find out and how you can get involved and help shape sustainability at the University. Plus, test your carbon literacy with the ‘How Bad Are Bananas?’  game to win some sustainable goodies.

Take a guided tour of the Energy Centre and learn about how it has successfully helped the University to reduce its carbon emissions through the use of efficient technology.

All staff and students are invited to pop along to the Food Pantry Love Food Hate Waste special on both 27th and 28th February offering money saving advice and guidance, and cooking demonstrations using leftovers donated by the Liverpool Zero Waste Community.

Lecture: Science of Climate Change and COP28 Briefing: Join Karl Whittle, Professor of Zero Carbon and Nuclear Energy and Ric Williams, Professor of Ocean and Climate Science as they discuss the science of climate change, the challenges of meeting the goal of net zero carbon, and some of the key energy proposals that were put forward by the negotiations at COP28.

From reducing single use plastics to advice on how to save energy and water, the Sustainable Laboratories  presentation and Q&A will provide an update on the Laboratory Efficiency and Assessment Framework (LEAF), plus tips for laboratory users on how to improve the sustainability of laboratories and technical workspaces and explain why it’s so important we manage our laboratories sustainably. There are also guided tours of the LEAF accredited laboratories at Life SciencesCentral Teaching labs, and Materials Innovation Factory.

Cycling experts Peloton are on hand on to help you discover the most picturesque bike routes around the city whilst increasing your confidence on two wheels.

There will be sustainability themed film screenings throughout the week, including Wall-E and Dark Waters at the Guild, and Children of Men in the Victoria Gallery and Museum (as voted for by you!).

Crosby Beach litter pick: Explore the gorgeous beaches of Crosby with the Guild of Students and spend an afternoon cleaning up the coast, to improve beaches for the community, wildlife and environment. Just bring yourself! All equipment and train tickets will be provided.

As part of the Leave Liverpool Tidy campaign, join the Guild for a clothing Swap Shop, to make your fashion choices a little bit more sustainable and “swap” til you drop.

Take a guided tour of the Spine Building, designed to be one of the world’s healthiest buildings. From the bottom up, every detail serves a purpose, all materials are sustainably sourced and the living wall feature uses high-oxygen producing plants to improve air quality and promote biodiversity. The concepts of the building make it one of the best working environments for mental health and physical wellbeing – with panoramic views across the City too!

Plus many more events, all listed on Sustainability Week webpages and the Feel Good February hub.
