Tuition fees for postgraduate research courses
To undertake postgraduate research, you'll need to cover the payment of tuition fees and any research support fees, as well as the costs of your living expenses.
The tuition fees stated in the tables below exclude potential research support fees, also known as 'bench fees'. These are additional annual fees which may apply – in addition to your tuition fees – if your research project requires significant consumables, equipment or other resources.
Programmes where a research support fee may apply are typically those which involve specialist laboratory work or field work. You'll be notified in your offer letter if research support fees apply for your intended PhD.

Some research projects incur a higher fee than others, eg if you're required to undertake laboratory work. You'll be informed of the fee for your intended PhD in your offer letter.

How to pay your tuition fees
Your options for paying your tuition fees depend on whether you're paying your tuition fees yourself (known as self-financing) or you've arranged for an external sponsor to make the payment on your behalf.
Self-financing students
If you (or your parents or supporters) are paying your tuition fees, you have a couple of payment options. You can:
- Pay your fees in full, at the start of the academic year, by the due date on your tuition fee invoice
- Pay your fees in instalments, by fixed deadlines through the academic year.

External sponsorship
If an external organisation, not a friend or relative, is paying all or part of your tuition fees on your behalf, the University will invoice them directly.
As a sponsored student, you're responsible for making sure that your tuition fees are paid. If you sponsor fails to pay your tuition fees (in line with our terms of trade), the invoice will be cancelled and the debt transferred to your fee account for you to pay directly to the University.

Transferring funds from abroad
If you're an international student, you'll need to ensure you bring sufficient funds with you to cover your tuition fees and living expenses, or have sufficient funds sent to you in instalments throughout the year.
If you're from a country with strict foreign exchange controls, you should make sure that permission can be obtained for the transmission of adequate funds.
