Rankin Studentship for Postgraduate Study in Egyptology (PhD)
The Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology is pleased to invite applications for one fees-only scholarship to support one doctoral student in Egyptology, tenable from 1 October 2025.
The successful candidate will receive a scholarship covering full-time funding for university fees at the UK (home) student rate, currently set at £5,006 for academic year 2025/26, for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
The competition is open to all home/UK students who have applied for the PhD programme in Egyptology and will commence their studies in academic year 2025/26 academic year.
Applications should be submitted by Friday 20 June at 12 noon (GMT).
How to apply
To apply for this scholarship, please provide:
- Your updated CV
- A detailed research proposal. This must be no longer than 1,500 words (including bibliography) and will outline the aims and objectives of the proposed research and its contribution to the broader field of study
- Copies of your academic transcripts. This is particularly important for candidates from outside the University of Liverpool. Students scheduled to finish their MA in September need to submit a printout of their marks in the programme, to date.
- A personal statement, of no more than 500 words, outlining:
- Your experience in the subject area
- Your reasons for choosing the University of Liverpool and this programme
- Your future aim or career plan
- How the programme of study enables you to achieve this
- Why you should be considered for this scholarship
- Details of your proposed supervisory team and contact that you may have already had with them.
Please also indicate if you are applying or have applied for any other bursary, award or scholarship offered by the University of Liverpool.
The award will be assessed based on academic merit. Please note that, with only one studentship available, only students who have achieved (or anticipate achieving) a First-Class Master’s degree (or equivalent) are likely to be able to submit a competitive application.

Terms and conditions
This scholarship is intended to fund one home student who is undertaking a full-time doctorate in the study of the Ancient Near East. Please note that students may not be in possession of any other bursary, award or scholarship awarded by the University of Liverpool, or of external doctoral funding such as the AHRC NWCDTP studentship.
