John Lennon Memorial Scholarship
The John Lennon Memorial Scholarships were set up by a trust fund endowed in the University for the provision of scholarships in the memory of John Lennon by his family. The award is intended to support students from Merseyside who might be in financial need and enhance, among other things, awareness of global problems and environmental issues.
Amount
There are two competition streams for applicants and each applicant may enter only one:
- Taught postgraduate and MRes: A contribution towards tuition fees to a maximum of £4500 towards the fee for the academic year 2024/25
- Research postgraduate: A contribution towards fees and/or maintenance of up to £12000 per annum for up to 3 years subject to satisfactory progression and re-registration. Pro rata adjustments will be made for part time students over 5 years.
If you are a current research student, the amount will be £12000 per annum until the end of the third year of full-time registration when you should go submission pending. For example, if you are starting your second year, you will get two years of funding. This is pro rata’d for part time study. As a rule, we don’t fund the final year of study.
Eligibility
If you are a current or prospective Home postgraduate (taught and research), either born in or with very strong family connections to Merseyside and who have academic offer from the University of Liverpool, you are eligible to apply. The award is available to all subject areas studied on the main University campus. It does not have to be an unconditional offer at this point.
The John Lennon Memorial Scholarship is available to all prospective and current Home (UK) students. Please note that international students are not eligible for application to this scholarship.
In accordance with the donor's intentions, priority will be given to applicants whose permanent residence is Merseyside or who have a significant period of residence (independent of study). All prospective postgraduate students must have accepted an offer to study at the University of Liverpool. Awards will be made on the basis of financial need and academic merit, and applicants should demonstrate an active and interest in global, community and environmental issues.
Key information
If you are a current PGR student, the award is available from 1 October until the end of the third year of your registration (or part time equivalent).
Please note that the Scholarships Sub-Committee may insert additional eligibility criteria to the list above. For example, the Scholarship Sub-Committee may target some awards at particular disciplines or levels, if deemed appropriate.
