Labid Al-Fakhri Scholarship
The Liverpool School of Architecture is pleased to announce the establishment of the Labid Al-Fakhri Scholarship, which seeks to support undergraduate students from Iraq, of Iraqi heritage, or from the Middle East more broadly.
The scholarship is funded by a generous donation from Mrs Patricia Al-Fakhri, in memory of her late husband, Labid. Born in Baghdad in 1941, Labid graduated from the Liverpool School of Architecture in 1967, and worked in several architectural practices before being offered a position in the UAE. In 1979, he established his own business which, by the time he retired in 2019, had 35 employees.
In his honour, one generous scholarship worth £20,000 per year will be awarded to a student from the Middle East coming to study one of the following programmes at the Liverpool School of Architecture:
Preference will be given to students from Iraq or of Iraqi Heritage as per the Donor’s request, but students from the following countries are also invited to apply:
- Algeria
- Egypt
- Jordan
- Lebanon
- Libya
- Morocco
- Palestine
- Tunisia
- Yemen.
The scholarship will be awarded as a fee reduction, spread over the duration of the programme: two years for MArch; three years for BA Architecture.
Application process – academic year 2025/26
All eligible applicants will be automatically considered for the scholarship, providing they already hold an offer to join the Liverpool School of Architecture in September 2025.
The scholarship will be awarded on merit based on the quality of the application and the portfolio submitted at the time of applying.
This scholarship will open for applications every two or three years, depending on the duration of the current winner’s programme. The timeline for the next round will be confirmed on this page in due course.
Conditions
- Candidates must be from Iraq, of Iraqi heritage, or from one of the other countries specified above, and be able to demonstrate this
- The scholarship is available on BA Architecture and MArch Master of Architecture only
- Candidates must hold an offer to study on one of the eligible programmes. Candidates are welcome to apply for the scholarship before they have heard the outcome of their application for the academic programme, but only those made an offer of a place to study by the closing date will be considered for the scholarship
- The scholarship will be awarded as a discount on the tuition fee at the start of each academic year. The scholarship is conditional on successful academic progress and demonstration of professional behaviour. The panel reserves the right to withdraw or suspend the scholarship if there are any reasons for concern
- The scholarship cannot be combined with other University awards
- In the event that the value of the scholarship exceeds the total cost of the course, the remaining balance will be used to support the student in covering living costs or any associated course costs, eg materials
- The successful candidate will be notified of the outcome by Monday 30 June 2025
- The successful candidate will keep the Donor regularly updated on their progress and achievements
- The successful candidate will be required to assist in the promotion of the scholarship and the academic programme as appropriate and when requested to do so.
