The Aziz Foundation Scholarship

The University of Liverpool together with the Aziz Foundation are offering master’s scholarships to support British Muslims who are dedicated to bringing positive change to society and have career aspirations in media and journalism, technology, sustainability and the environment, arts and culture, policy (excluding health) and law.

Amount

The scholarship will cover your home UK postgraduate taught programme tuition fees.

Scholarships are awarded to UK individuals with career aspirations in media and journalism, technology, sustainability and the environment, arts and culture, policy (excluding health) and law.

If you receive an Aziz Foundation Scholarship, you will no longer be eligible for other University of Liverpool scholarships or bursaries.

About the Aziz Foundation

The Aziz Foundation was established in 2015 by the Aziz family and is inspired by the values and teaching of Islam to support the most disadvantaged communities in Britain.

Since 2019 the Foundation has focused on supporting Muslim individuals by offering master's scholarships that allow recipients to progress in their careers and make meaningful contributions to their industry, community and society as a whole.

If your application for an Aziz Foundation Scholarship is successful, you'll receive a full scholarship to cover your master's tuition fees and access to a programme of training days and career mentors via Aziz Scholarships Plus and the Aziz Scholars Association.

Eligibility criteria

You are required to meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be eligible for Home fees status at the University
  • Be active within a Muslim community and demonstrate intimate knowledge of issues affecting British Muslim communities
  • Be able to demonstrate long-term commitment to community/societal development within Britain
  • Show how the course will increase your effectiveness in one of the following areas relating to British Muslims:
    • Effective Advocacy and Enhance Public Perception – facilitating better representation and contribution of Muslims to civil society to combat Islamophobia and positively transform perceptions of British Muslims
    • Community Service and Social Development – raising the aspirations and standards within British Muslim communities

In addition to the above, you are also expected to have:

  • Excellent understanding of your chosen industry and how to progress within it, with relevant, prior experience and/or achievements in the field
  • Knowledge of how the course will enable you to generate social impact.

Means testing and Zakat eligibility

The Aziz Foundation prioritises scholarships for candidates who can demonstrate that they cannot afford all or part of the tuition fees for their proposed Masters course.

These scholarships are being given as Zakat. Therefore, you will have to self-assess to determine your Zakat eligibility. Please use the Islamic Relief and/or NZF Zakat calculator(s) as an indicator. If you do not owe any Zakat, you will be eligible.

You will have to demonstrate that you would not be able to self-fund your course.

You are not eligible to apply if:

  • Your course is funded by the undergraduate funding system or the NHS (contact us if you are unsure)
  • You are completing an integrated masters, such as the MArch.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online, via a portal on the Aziz Foundation website.

Due to the competitive nature of the award, it is recommended that you apply early. Please do not wait to see what the outcome of your bachelor’s degree is, if you are interested in this scholarship then please do make an application.

You can apply online during one of two application cycles.

  • Cycle 1 is typically January through to March
  • Cycle 2 is typically April through to June.

The scholarship application process is undertaken independently of your study application to Liverpool. Both applications must be successful for you to receive the scholarship.
