It is essential that all published, and web-based material accurately reflects the level of support available and clearly outlines the University’s support services, including counselling, mental health support, careers advice, disability support, health services and accommodation. The University positively encourages applicants with mental health support needs to make these known to the University, so that they may be directed to the University’s Disability Advice and Guidance Team and/or the University’s Mental Health Advisory Service before admission in order to identify any support needs and entitlements.
If an applicant declares a mental health support need, admissions, tutors and other staff must give accurate information about the level of support available and are advised to consult Disability Advice and Guidance before making any commitment. Staff can also get advice from the Mental Health Advisory Service. It is extremely important that staff do not make promises, whether relating to learning and teaching or to personal support, no matter how well-intentioned, which exceed what the University is able to provide.
Support and Consultation for students after admission
The University provides a range of support services that can help staff to clarify, consider and respond to difficult and challenging situations. The services are available to every member of the University and can provide the first response to most situations. For more information on University services please email advice@liverpool.ac.uk
By identifying problems at an early stage and referring students to the appropriate staff, personal problems can be tackled, and possibly resolved. At the very least, students can be offered advice and personal support.
