Unfortunately in England, dental care is not usually free even on the NHS, and there is no automatic exemption for students. You may qualify for free NHS dental care if you get full help with costs through the NHS Low Income Scheme, or you fall into one of the following categories:

  • Age under 18
  • Age 19 or under in full time education
  • Pregnant, or had a baby in the last 12 months
  • You’re staying in an NHS hospital and the dental treatment is carried out by the hospital dentist
  • You receive, or you’re under 20 and dependant on someone who receives, income support or Jobseekers Allowance

You’ll need to register with a dental practice to receive treatment – make sure you know whether you’re signing up for an NHS dentist or a private one. Some practices have both.

You can find a dentist using the NHS search tool – there may be a long waiting list to join, or some practices may not be taking on new patients. It is best to keep checking.

NHS dentist treatment costs are in ‘bands’ depending on what needs to be done. If you choose to sign up to a private dentist, be aware you will pay significantly more for any treatment, and usually will not receive financial support for it.

You may be able to get free dental treatment by volunteering to be a patient at our Dental School.
