Anxiety Clinic |
We can all experience negative thinking at times, however when frequent it can contribute to worry and anxiety. This can be common, but it can affect our feelings and emotions, in some cases leading to poor sleep, social anxiety or panic attacks. This clinic will help you recognise the signs and symptoms and develop strategies to reduce anxious thoughts and challenge negative thinking. |
Low mood & motivation Clinic |
When we are experiencing the stresses and strains of life it is not uncommon to experience low mood and in turn, reduced motivation. This is to be expected, but it can prevent us from feeling well and impact upon our overall health and wellbeing. This clinic will help you recognise the signs and symptoms and develop strategies to help improve motivation and boost your mood. |
What to expect from attending our clinics:
Our wellbeing clinics are one off sessions and are designed to be an initial step of support for you, providing valuable information and practical techniques to support you with some of the concerns you have mentioned on your triage form.
The clinics will help you recognise the signs and symptoms and develop strategies to help improve motivation, boost your mood or help you better manage anxiety.
In the clinic itself, there is no expectation at all for you to speak, you can simply listen to the information being delivered in a supportive environment with others that may feel similarly to you.
We will encourage you to try to practice and implement what you have learned in the clinics. For some of you, this clinic will be enough but if you find no improvement, please contact us again and we can re-triage your needs and offer you the next step of support if appropriate.
If you are interested in either of these weekly sessions, please contact advice@liverpool.ac.uk
Frequently Asked Questions:
I’m not comfortable in a group setting, do I need to talk?
We understand that it feels daunting to be in a group setting, there should be some familiarity in that this will likely be similar to attending a small lecture. You will not be expected to speak up. There is opportunity to engage with the content via an anonymous online platform. We do not ask you to share any personal information, please be assured this is not group therapy.
What’s the room like?
We use a seminar room rather than a lecture theatre so will be a familiar environment to you. There will be a set up similar to a lecture in that we will present you with information and support around dealing with anxiety. There will be two wellbeing practitioners running the clinic.
Is the clinic the same as group therapy?
No. The our clinics are very different from group therapy, put simply, they are psycho-educational sessions were our Wellbeing Practitioners will explained how to recognise the signs and symptoms of low mood or anxiety and develop strategies to reduce negative and anxious thoughts and challenge negative thinking.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
We would ask that you bring a pen and your phone as you will need to complete some tasks using these items.
Can I not just access 1 -1 therapy?
The University offers a pathway of support. The counselling service is one aspect of this and they ask that for students presenting with anxiety and low mood the clinic is completed first. The clinic is the first step in the support pathway and provides you with the tools to implement the evidence based techniques you will learn during the clinic over the following 6 weeks. If you then require further support you will have a 1 to 1 appointment with a wellbeing practitioner to review your plan and work. Following this we can refer you to the counselling team for a single session therapy you will be asked by the counselling team which of these techniques you have implemented and the outcome prior to your session with a counsellor as part of the SST process and this will help you get the most from the appointment with the therapist.
Is it a one off?
The clinic session is a one off session but this is the start of 6 weeks of support as the clinic will provide you with evidence based techniques from CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and DBT (dialectical and behavioural therapy) to complete. You can then have a one to one session for review of this with a wellbeing practitioner if needed and we can also refer on to further support if needed.
Do I get any follow up support?
The clinic session is a one off session but this is the start of 6 weeks of support as the clinic will provide you with evidence based techniques from CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and DBT (dialectical and behavioural therapy) to complete. You can then have a one to one session for review of this with a wellbeing practitioner if needed and we can also refer on to further support if needed.
Do I have to stay for the full 1.5 hours?
You are expected to stay for the full time so that you can benefit. If the clinic you have been booked into clashes with another commitment please inform us so we can book you onto an alternative clinic.
