Disability Advice and Guidance can also provide funding based on a specific disability-related need for students not entitled to this external disability funding or roles not available via DSA e.g. Study Assistant, Exam Reader.
What to expect from your support worker:
- Your support worker will be appropriately qualified/experienced in their role
- You should receive student-centred support which is sensitive to your individual study needs and academic priorities
- Your sessions should focus on developing your academic skills, building your confidence and improving your access to learning
- Support for you to achieve a more autonomous way of learning
- Your personal information is confidential and will not be shared without your permission, except where there is reasonable belief that you might be at risk of harming yourself or others.
However, you should be aware that subject specific and proof-reading support are outside of the remit of your support worker and will not be available.
You are expected to:
- Arrive on time for appointments and, where possible, give 24 hours’ notice of cancellation
- Take an active part in your support
- Respect the boundaries of the support worker role and not to ask for or expect your support worker to provide any additional support that is outside the remit of their role
- Check and sign your session time-sheets promptly. You should not be expected to sign in advance for future sessions.
How to access additional support hours
If you feel that additional hours of support are required, you will need to request these from the Needs Assessment Centre which carried out your original Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) Needs Assessment if your support worker is funded by your DSA.
If your support worker funding is provided by the University, complete the Review Appointment form to discuss your additional needs with the Disability Advice and Guidance team.
