Rhys Hamlyn
I am currently undertaking a NERC funded Ph.D. at The University of Manchester within the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences as part of the Basin Studies and Petroleum Geoscience research group. My research involves integrating sedimentary architecture and diagenesis within the Mancos Shale of Utah and Colorado (USA), a mudstone deposited during the Cretaceous Period within an ancient sea - Western Interior Seaway. I am specifically interested in mudstone depositional processes and the expression of sequence stratigraphic markers within mudstones.
Through the DTP, I am able to participate in a wide variety of NERC-funded and other available courses. I have already undertaken NERC-funded courses in Southampton where techniques were developed in sediment core description, analysis and interpretation, and in Manchester/Liverpool where I gained advanced understanding of the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and other microscopy instruments. I have also undertaken courses in programming at Manchester even though it is not directly related to my research. By attending additional courses directly related to my research and like the aforementioned, I will be able to broaden and develop my skills.
Throughout my Ph.D., I aim to present my research at conferences nationally and internationally to expand the possibility of future collaborations within academia or industry.
