Callum Thompson
I started my PhD in the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester in September 2014. Prior to this I completed my BSc in Mathematics and Physics at the University of Edinburgh and my MSc in Applied Mathematical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University.
I am supervised by David Schultz and Geraint Vaughan on a project looking at inertial instability in the atmosphere, particularly in the outflow layer of hurricanes. This entails building a global climatology of inertial instability using reanalysis data sets and investigating how this correlates with the hurricane best track data. I will also be using the Weather Research & Forecasting Model (WRF) to perform idealised and case study simulations of hurricanes in regions on inertial instability.
As part of this project I have already been able to attend two workshops; one in Julich, Germany on Atmospheric Chemistry & Dynamics and the NCAS Introduction to Atmospheric Science workshop at the University of Warwick. Both of which have been extremely helpful in transitioning to meteorology from my background in mathematics and there’s still more workshops I’m looking forward to!
