Things to do as a commuting student
Enjoying life at university doesn’t rely on living on campus. If you’re commuting from home, don’t worry, there are still plenty of ways to get involved with campus life, meet new people, and enjoy a fantastic and enriching student experience.
Whether you’re looking for ways to hang out with friends, find places to study or just want to soak up the best of student life, you can do so on our campus.
The Guild
The Guild is the University’s students’ union. As soon as you join the University of Liverpool, you automatically become a member of the Guild. And the good news is it’s not just a place for those living on campus to enjoy. As a commuting student, it offers lots of ways to get involved with student life and make the most of your time here.
One of the best ways to meet new friends is to join a society or club run by the Guild. Whatever you’re interested in, you’re sure to find a group that will add a bit of excitement and enrichment to your time in Liverpool. You can further explore your current interests and hobbies, or you might even want to try something new while connecting with your fellow students and making new friends.
The Guild also hosts events like gigs and offers volunteering opportunities so you can get involved while you’re on campus without having to live there.
It’s not all events and clubs either. Your Guild is also home to various student communities. If you self-identify as a REACH, LGBTQ+, Disabled, or a Woman Student, or you are a postgraduate, mature, or international student, you can join the community and find support to meet your specific needs, or meet fellow members of your community. It’s a great way to connect with like-minded people who you can share experiences with.
At the Guild, you’ll also find various shops, as well as places to buy food and drink or simply sit for a while and study. It’s a fantastic place to visit between lectures or even just to take some time to yourself throughout the day.
Sport Liverpool
You don’t need to be living on campus to join one of the many exciting sports teams at the University of Liverpool. If you want to meet new people while keeping active, get involved with Sport Liverpool. We offer a range of first-class facilities and affordable memberships for students both on and off campus.
Join one of our many sports teams with regular training times or learn a brand new sport with our expert instructors. You can also meet with friends to use our free sports facilities, such as outdoor basketball and football courts. Or if you’re looking to keep fit, join the gym and head along whenever your schedule suits.
Libraries
Your university experience wouldn’t be complete without many trips to the library. We have two libraries on our Liverpool campus, Harold Cohen Library and Sydney Jones Library. You can book a study room to work with friends and access academic support. Find out more about our libraries.
For our commuting students, the library can be a great place to get some studying in between classes, as well as being a great venue for group work on your courses. And during term time, libraries are open 24/7, so you can always rely on somewhere to study, no matter your travel schedule.
Student support and careers services
As a commuting student, you can benefit from a range of support services while on campus from our friendly and helpful teams.
Student Services can provide guidance on mental health, well-being, finances, visas, immigration, and more. You can book a convenient appointment time with them via the online portal, so you know you can always speak to someone who can help at a time when you’re on campus.
You can also enjoy access to a range of support for taking your next steps after university. Our Careers and Employability team is on hand to provide specialist help with finding jobs and the right career move for you, as well as being able to help find you employment while at university.
These services provide a wealth of support that helps make the campus a safe space, where all students are encouraged and enabled to thrive.
The Tung
We’re all about bringing fantastic events and art to our students, whether you live on campus or not. One of the best places to go to attend these is the Tung, our brand new, state-of-the-art concert hall.
It can be found inside the Yoko Ono Lennon Centre on campus. It’s a wonderful venue where you can attend live music events. It’s a good place to go with friends or meet new people. Check out the programme, there’s something for everyone!
