Getting around Liverpool
Famed for its art, culture, music and sport, there are plenty of things you’ll want to do and see when you live and study here. Thankfully, getting around Liverpool is simple thanks to its great transport network, so exploring the fantastic offerings from the city and surrounding areas is easy.
Liverpool as a city is compact. It was even named by Forbes as the 12th most walkable city in the world. But even if you don’t want to walk around the city, there are lots of public transport options to help you get around. And with the city centre just a 10-minute walk from our central campus, you’ll have easy access to the very best of Liverpool.
Travelling by bus
Buses run regularly throughout the day. So, you’ll be well connected to the Liverpool City Region, Cheshire and beyond. Bus operators include Arriva and Stagecoach.
Several bus stops are located around our campus. The main bus stations in the city centre are in Queens Square and Liverpool ONE – just a 15-minute and 20-minute walk away from our central campus respectively.
If you take the bus often, it can be a good idea to buy a discounted bus pass. These passes can be used on any Arriva service across the north-west.

Popular routes
699: This is the main bus into the city from our campus. The 699 connects you to Greenbank halls of residence. It runs every day during term time and is operated by Arriva.
It takes around 20 minutes to travel from the University of Liverpool (Brownlow Hill) to Greenbank Student Village.
82: On this route, you can travel from Liverpool ONE to Otterspool Park, a popular area for walks, cycling and family days out. This service also connects you to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, making it the ideal route for our international students.

- It takes around 40 minutes to travel from Liverpool ONE to Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
80/80A/86/86A/86C: These services run frequently from the city centre. They all run through Hardman Street – just a 4-minute walk from the Knowledge Quarter.
Popular places on these routes include Smithdown Road, Allerton Road and the iconic Penny Lane. These areas are home to a large student community. They’re also packed with bars, pubs are restaurants that host live music and sport.
These routes also take you within walking distance of two of Liverpool’s most loved green spaces - Sefton Park and Calderstones Park.
- It takes around 23 minutes to travel from Hardman Street to Smithdown Road
- It takes around 26 minutes to travel from Hardman Street to Allerton Road.
76: This service is well connected to some of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks. This includes Penny Lane, Beaconsfield Road (home of Strawberry Field), and John Lennon’s childhood home on Menlove Avenue.
- It takes around 30 to 35 minutes to travel from Liverpool ONE to Penny Lane
- It takes around 35 to 40 minutes to travel from Liverpool ONE to Menlove Avenue.
Taxis in Liverpool
The city is served by plenty of taxi services, so you can always get where you need to be, or get home safely after a night out. Taxis in Liverpool include black taxis, private hire taxis and Uber vehicles.
It’s a good idea to book a private taxi before a night out to get you to your destination reliably and so you know when your transport home will arrive, so you don’t have to wait around.
Costs will vary depending on traffic and the hire firm you choose. The average private taxi fare from Liverpool city centre to Greenbank Student Village is approximately £9.
Cycling and scooters
Bikes and scooters are ideal for travelling through the city on a budget. There are hundreds of cycle lanes across the city region, with routes from our campuses. You can access our Active Travel Map, (PDF, 4.9MB) for routes and cycle facilities.
Our students can hire a LivCycle bike from the Liverpool Guild of Students at a reasonable price:
- Academic year (or 12 months): £60 plus £50 refundable deposit
- One semester (or 6 months): £40 plus £50 refundable deposit.
Hiring scooters
Like cycling, e-scooters are a fun and sustainable way to travel. 400 e-scooters are available to hire in Liverpool city centre and the surrounding areas.
E-scooters cost £1 to unlock and are then charged at 20p per minute. Daily and monthly passes are available if you want to use them regularly. You can rent an e-scooter using the Voi app.
Please note, it’s only legal to ride rental scooters from Voi if you have a provisional driving licence. You must comply with road traffic legislation.
Visiting nearby areas
Travel when you live and study in Liverpool is not just about getting around the city. It’s also about making the most of the beautiful surrounding areas, such as Cheshire, Cumbria and North Wales.
When you buy a train ticket from Merseyrail, you can use it to travel to anywhere on the Merseyrail network. This includes Chester and Cheshire and New Brighton. You can get to most places on the Merseyrail network in under an hour.
Travelling to Manchester
Much like Liverpool, Manchester is renowned for its sport, culture and music. Check out alternative hot spots in the Northern Quarter and enjoy some retail therapy in one of many local shopping centres.
You can travel from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester with a few train operators. This includes Northern Rail, TransPennine Express and East Midlands Railway.
It takes around an hour to get from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Piccadilly.
Travelling to Cumbria
The Lake District is in the heart of Cumbria and is known as one of the most beautiful regions in the United Kingdom. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is celebrated for its stunning lakes and mountains. So, if you love long walks and scenic views, this is the place for you.
It takes around 2 hours to travel from Liverpool Lime Street to Windermere.
Travelling to North Wales
North Wales is well known for its mountain views and picturesque coastlines. It’s a popular destination with those looking for adventure. Here, you can experience ziplining, abseiling, rock climbing and much more.
It takes around 2 hours, 20 minutes to travel from Liverpool Lime Street to Llandudno.
