How your work is assessed

Assessment is an essential element of the learning process, integral to learning and teaching, a means of developing knowledge, understanding and skills, and of measuring achievement.

The following 10 principles define how assessment is designed and how it is experienced across our programmes.

  1. Assessment is designed to promote effective learning, to motivate, challenge and reinforce previous learning
  2. Assessment aligns directly to the intended learning outcomes for the unit being assessed
  3. Assessment is designed in the light of student experience and external input
  4. Wherever appropriate assessment is authentic, reflecting the knowledge and skills students will need in the future
  5. Across the programme, assessment is appropriately varied and takes into account the diversity of the student body and student workload
  6. Assessment provides a balance of formative as well as summative assessment opportunities across the programme
  7. Assessment provide an opportunity to receive useful feedback to enhance future learning
  8. Transparent criteria for assessment are known in advance and applied in marking
  9. Assessment is managed consistently and fairly, with clear expectations communicated about roles and responsibilities
  10. Assessment format and outcomes are systematically and regularly evaluated and reviewed.
