What to do if you can't attend University

If you know you won’t be able to attend the University and your timetabled activities for a period of time, perhaps because you are unwell or if you need to attend an interview for a work placement, you should let the University know as soon as possible. This will enable us to update your attendance reports accordingly and more importantly, make sure you receive the support and guidance you need to succeed in your studies.

You should manage your time and plan in advance for non-illness related absences. So, if you have to make a doctor or dentist appointment in advance, you should try to make it outside the times when you're expected to be in lectures or other timetabled sessions.

You should request an approved absence as soon as you can and no later than seven calendar days from the start of your absence.

If you think you will need time away from your studies on an ongoing or regular basis, you should contact your Student Experience Team to discuss this in more detail as soon as possible.

You should not use the absence system to request an absence during an assessment or exam period. In this instance, please contact your School/Department without delay, as you may need to submit an application for  Extenuating Circumstances.

It is important to remember that even for authorised absences, you are responsible for:

  • Catching up on any academic work that you missed – so please talk to your session leads
  • Making sure you meet any professional body expectations in relation to attendance on your programme (where relevant)
  • Meeting any attendance obligations as set out in your student visa and sponsorship agreement (if you have one)
