Sub-Aqua
Welcome to the University of Liverpool Sub-Aqua club!
Our club offers two underwater activities, Scuba Diving and Underwater Hockey, with a single membership to LUSAC providing access to both.
Scuba Diving
Discover wreck diving for the history buffs, and marine reserves for the nature lovers.
- No prior diving experience is required, as training at all levels can be provided by our qualified members.
- Qualifications we issue are accredited by BSAC, and so can be used worldwide.
- We mainly do drysuit diving in the UK (e.g. Cornwall, the Farne Islands, the Isle of Man, North Wales, the Scottish Isles etc), but we also have at least one annual club trip abroad (e.g. Malta, Cyprus, Madeira, Tenerife, Croatia, the Red Sea etc).
- Learning to dive via a student club is the cheapest route. This is due to you having free access to the club; BCDs, Cylinders, Regs, Drysuits, Undersuits, Weight Belts, Lead Weights, etc, plus Free Air Fills, Free Pool Entry and Free Instructor Training.
Underwater Hockey
Underwater Hockey is a fast-paced apnea sport invented by scuba divers, so it’s rather niche, think gamified freediving!
- Underwater hockey has a truly 3D playing area, as you can be above or below fellow players, meaning it’s like playing a game in space!
- Unlike other team sports that favour extroverts, there's no shouting underwater, so the silence means body language & knowing your teammates is vital.
- Plus, no single person can be the lone star of the show, as they’re limited by their breath hold, with even those of high cardio fitness getting humbled by CO2.
- And as a water sport, underwater hockey is very low impact on the body, so people of all walks of life can play together.
- Fear not, as a lesser known sport, very few people have grown up playing, so beginners needn’t worry, come give it a go!
- Taster sessions are formally run during freshers/refreshers, but we also welcome anyone joining us midway through the year.
- Competitions we take part in include; Student Nationals, Nautilus and a full calendar of friendlies with other Universities.
- We also have regular training opportunities to become a certified British Octopush Association national referee.
Training Times
Underwater Hockey matches are played at the bottom of the 2m end of the pool, with Scuba Diving pool training taking place in the deep end. We often meet-up for a pre-hockey drink/meal in The Font, but you’ll always find us enjoying a post-training pub social in the AJ on campus after every session!

Unique Offerings
- For the conservationists & environmentalists, we’re always on the lookout for ways we can support green initiatives with our scuba skillsets, whether that’s; underwater litter picking, marine surveying in the Liverpool docklands, sea grass planting on the Llŷn Peninsula/Angelsey, or charity fundraising via Santa dives etc.
- For the nautically minded individuals, our club owns and operates two RIBS (Rigid Inflatable Boats), housed in the boat shed on campus. So being a member of LUSAC provides ample opportunities to learn how to launch, maintain & repair seagoing vessels, and/or an inexpensive route to becoming a Boat Handler.
- For the technically savvy individuals, our scuba diving equipment requires ongoing attention due to high safety standards, therefore there are always chances to learn how to use different tools & techniques to service a plurality of different types of technical equipment.
- For the mechanically oriented individuals, we have year-round opportunities to learn how to operate and maintain our two air compressors.
- For the marine biology enthusiasts, the skills developed whilst partaking in this societies activities confer a significant competitive advantage in the job market, with alumni of our club having gone on to work for public sector organisations such as Natural England etc.
- For any non-students, including; alumni & staff of any Liverpool-based university, and locals, we need your varied skills & knowledge to keep things safe and thriving for all our members. As such, if you think you’d make a good addition to our club, please feel free to get in touch.
