Rowing
Welcome to the University of Liverpool Rowing club
Liverpool University Boat Club, established in 1926, is one of the oldest clubs at the University of Liverpool. Our Men’s and Women’s Squads are made up of both novice and experienced rowers.
We provide a fun and accessible way of joining the sport in which we will teach you from the ground up how to row. Anyone and everyone are welcome to come down and try it out! If you show passion and commitment throughout the learning process, you will have the opportunity to race across the country! Our learn to row programme is one of the best in the nation, boasting many medals and high placing results in recent years.
For those that know how to row, you will join our ‘Senior Squads’, led by either the Men’s or the Women’s Captain. Within these competitive squads, we compete at a high level against many other clubs or universities around the country.
In 2022- 2023, LUBC gratefully received ‘Performance Status’ by the AU. This allowed us to break club records within the novice squad and to invest money into better equipment, boats and blades. Moreover, those athletes competing at the highest level within the club have access to a nutritionist, a psychologist, physios as well as club gym sessions, with onsite trainers, twice a week.
Competitive
Over the year we represent the University in local and national races including British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) Head held in Newcastle, BUCS Regatta at Nottingham, Fours Head and the Head of the River Race on the Thames, then finally qualifiers for the to race at Henley Reggatta and Henley Women's Regatta.
In November we host Novice Race Day - this is a peek into the excitement of racing - which is BUCS endorsed and attracts a great deal of competition around the Northwest. Other regional racing for all squads includes our annual Liverpool Universities Varsity against Liverpool John Moores as well as Chester Regatta, North of England Head and more!
Training times
Our members train three days a week at Runcorn Rowing Club (RRC) on the river Weaver, benefiting from over 20km of water, arguably the best in Northwest England. Land training consists of erg sessions and strength and conditioning sessions at the main University gym, Greenbank Halls of Residence gym or Vine Court gym for the performance athletes.
Every spring we provide the opportunity to go to camp around the country or even abroad! This can be a great way to bond with your teammates, create core memories and finalize your steps into joining our senior squad.
Social events
The club is proud to have a lively social scene with events ranging from fancy dress-themed Athletic Union nights to traditional LUBC activities such as Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Dinners and the annual Christmas Ball. We also organise fundraising events throughout the year such as the twenty-four hour ‘Row-a-thon’ to raise money for Claires House.
