What a brilliant time to join a Department dedicated to addressing the most challenging issues facing society.
In sociology, you will explore questions like “How has British society changed in the past 50 years and why?”. In social policy, the issues you will investigate will include what role the state has in addressing entrenched social inequalities. In criminology, you might ask what function the criminal justice system has in exacerbating divisions in society.
During your time on your course, our world-class teaching and research staff will bring these issues vividly to life and challenge you to think critically and creatively about the social world around you.
For now, though, the main task is just to settle into the University, and we want to make your transition into university life as smooth as possible. These Welcome Week pages contain important information about the schedule for Welcome Week and how to contact the Student Support Centre if you have any questions.
I very much look forward to welcoming you to the Department in September.
Professor Shadd Maruna
Head of Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology
