Sabreen Syeed

Biography

Sabreen Syeed is an academic from Kashmir, India. She completed her bachelor's in mechanical engineering (First Class) from Anna Malai University, India in 2011. Being interested in the interdisciplinary field of Religion, Science and Philosophy, she made the unconventional move from Engineering to Humanities when she obtained her M.A in Philosophy (First Class). She also completed a certificate course in Arabic language in 2023 along with pursuing a second master's degree, this time, in Islamic Studies.

After having received a University Fellowship on qualifying an All-India national exam in the humanities field (UGC-NET), she started her research at the Islamic University of Science and Technology in Kashmir. She spent a year studying the Applicability of Iqbalian metaphysics to questions of Quantum Physics, Consciousness and Fine Tuning in the universe. She has also worked as a contractual Assistant Professor at Department of Philosophy, Cluster University. She taught modules on Bioethics, Philosophy of Science, Logic and Indian Philosophy.

In 2019, Sabreen created a mini film series on the Islamic scientific tradition in collaboration with a UAE based media house. Sabreen created her own online series called The Second Golden Age where she highlighted the significant contributions of the Islamic scientific revolution to the making of the contemporary world. Sabreen is also the Secretary Media and Research of Homa- Civilizational Dialogue and Harmony Foundation, a think tank in India.

Research

Sabreen’s research interests include the history and philosophy of science and technology, with a special focus on the Islamic scientific heritage (8th-18th CE) and its impact on the making of contemporary science. She is also interested in the field of Religion, Philosophy and science, specifically the subjects of consciousness, interpretations of Quantum Physics, Time and the ultimate nature of the universe.

‘Islamicate Scholars, Algorithms and the Making of the Contemporary World: A Decolonial Study of Mathematical, Scientific and Technological Practice in the Islamic Golden Age’.
